What is ankle ligament reconstruction?

Ankle ligament reconstruction is a surgical procedure that repairs or rebuilds damaged ligaments, which are strong bands of tissue that connect bone to bone. In the ankle, ligaments support movement and stability. However, any misstep or rolling of the ankle may stretch the ligament, affecting function.

When ligaments overstretch or weaken, you may experience ankle instability. This is when you feel like your ankle is constantly giving out, which is common in people with repeated ankle sprains.

Dr. Otten performs ankle ligament reconstruction to restore stability.

Who might benefit from ankle ligament reconstruction?

Anyone with repeated ankle sprains or feeling like their ankle is always “giving out” may benefit from ankle ligament reconstruction. Dr. Otten, however, only recommends surgery when conservative care like activity modification and physical therapy fail to get the results you want.

Common symptoms of ankle instability include:

  • Ankle rolling
  • Persistent swelling
  • Discomfort during activity
  • Difficulty walking on uneven ground

Without proper treatment, ankle instability may damage cartilage or increase the risk of future injuries.

Dr. Otten performs a thorough evaluation when you come in with ankle instability to determine the cause. She evaluates your foot and ankle, reviews your injury history, and may order imaging studies to determine the severity of the injury and the best course of action.

What happens during ankle ligament reconstruction?

Dr. Otten customizes ankle ligament reconstruction based on severity, overall health, and goals. She reviews the plan before the procedure so you know what to expect.

Dr. Otten may tighten the existing ligament or use a tissue graft to repair it. The goal of surgery is to restore ankle stability and preserve as much normal function as possible.

How long does it take to recover from ankle ligament reconstruction?

Recovery from ankle ligament reconstruction can vary, but it often takes several months. You need to stay off the ankle for several weeks with crutches, then transition to a cast, and then a removable boot.

You remain in the removable boot for several months while also doing physical therapy to strengthen the supportive muscles.

If you’re struggling with an ankle that’s always giving out, Dr. Otten can help. Call Kettle Moraine Podiatry today or book an appointment online.
